Peter Niswonger was born about 1755 on his parent's plantation in Virginia. Many of his heroic adventures are documented in his sister's diary as well by historians Samuel P. Hildreth and Col. Joseph Barker. Peter served in the militia and as a "spy" in the Revolutionary War. He and his family settled in Gallatin County, Illinois about 1820. Though he passed away in 1834, his descendants still live in this area.
